Yard House is an American cuisine franchise available in multiple locations in the USA. In Austin, Texas there is only one location and that is within the Domain Northside which is an upscale, outdoor shopping mall. If you are at the Domain to hang out with friends, go shopping, or grab a bite to eat with family and friends but someone in your inner circle is craving for some fried chicken, definitely stop by Yard House! It’s really easy to find within the Domain. Once you enter through the main entrance road off of Mopac Expressway, its the second intersection on the right corner, right before a strip of stores appear. You can park in the Blue garage which is only less than a two-minute walk away from the restaurant.

Yard House’s Nashville Hot Chicken Is Amazing

Ever had Nashville hot fried chicken? I haven’t, nor have I had the opportunity to travel to Tennessee yet. But is there a specific taste I am trying to find with fried chicken? Yep, and surprisingly I found it in an American franchise (though I am looking forward to a foodie tour in Tennessee one day)!

The difference between Yard House’s Nashville Hot Chicken vs Tumble 22, Donkey Mo’s, Gus’ Fried Chicken, and Hi Wings, is how close the skin is to the meat and hot sauce in the chicken, not on it!

Yes, there is an incredible difference in how I feel when eating fried chicken when the “skin” comes off. I don’t mind it when the crispy skin comes off where both sides of the skin are cooked through (and no fat is seen because it’s been cooked or slain off). Tumble22’s fried chicken is #3 on my list because of how separate the skin is from the chicken that, to me, it feels like two different dishes. As for Yard House, no matter how much you slice through that fried chicken, the skin always manages to stay on the damn chicken.

Some might say, well it’s good chicken, but there isn’t a lot of “meat” like other places. I’d like to disagree. One, we shouldn’t probably be eating an abundant amount of fried chicken for health reasons so I am thankful for the portion amount and two, once you’ve tried it, you’ll just want to savor the piece in your mouth. Why? The Nashville hot spice comes from within the chicken, and it’s not the other Southern way where you add hot sauce on top of your chicken.

When served the Nashville Hot Chicken at Yard House, you get a side of honey hot syrup, which when poured over your fried chicken, it totally enhances the breading of the chicken, and also the heat that comes from within the tenderized, juicy chicken meat. This honey hot sauce added to your dish isn’t an optional part of the dish, to me, it’s pretty mandatory. Though I’ve never needed to ask for honey hot syrup as the amount provided is the right amount of sauce for the fried chicken.

Foodie tip: Don’t eat the fried sage that’s on to of the chicken. It’s edible decorations, but nah. It doesn’t refresh your mouth when prepping for your next bite of chicken. It’s the opposite of eating a piece of ginger before your sushi.

Yard House’s House Honey Blonde Beer

I love this beer they have created in Escondido, California. It’s a house beer that you can’t buy anywhere but within Yard House. It’s a delectable beer that is refreshing, not hoppy, and with a nice hint of honey that blends well with the wheat-based beer. It’s an easy-drinking beer that isn’t just visually appealing for your Instagram pics, but it is so rounded and smooth on your taste buds alone, or with a pairing of the Nashville Hot Chicken. If you are a light drinker, or just want a refreshing yet classic American blonde ale, this one is a must to try at Yard House! It’s so popular that one time when we went to Yard House, it was sold out and I was totally disappointed because I really wanted that refreshing drink after a long day of work! Don’t worry, I survived because they had 149 other draft beers to choose from.

Alternative Sides for the Nashville Hot Chicken

Alright, we got to talk about this because this was almost a deal-breaker for me. I loved the Nashville Hot Chicken dish so much but I couldn’t justify the price of $17.95 with their sweet potato pancakes as a side that comes with the dish. Trust me, I am a huge fan of sweet potato but there was just something about these pancakes that didn’t feel right to eat together with the fried chicken. I wanted the ultimate basic experience with mac and cheese, beans or collard greens. After not asking for the first three times eating this dish, I finally mustered the courage (don’t know why I didn’t ask in the first place), if I can substitute the sweet potatoes pancakes for something else, and yep – sure could and did. I substituted it for Truffle Fries (has shredded parmesan and herbs on top of it). There’s a list of sides you can substitute it with that you can talk to your waiter about when ordering the Nashville Hot Chicken.

Maybe yourself, your friend, or family member is like my boyfriend who wants something wrapped in a bun and bit more “stacked” like a sandwich. Impressed as always, Yard House’s management was like yup – people will want a dish like this so they created the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich.

This sandwich meal is a whole lot less expensive, at a reasonable restaurant price of $13.75. It is an all-white chicken sandwich with spicy sweet slaw, aged white cheddar spreads, and fries on the side. He gets it every time.
