Azul Tequila will always have a special place in my heart in Austin, Texas, because of their exceptional Avocado Margaritas and their legit, homemade, complimentary salsa. I was introduced to this restaurant as a happy hour go-to-location with my girlfriends in early afternoon Fridays or during brunch time on the weekends. I quickly found out that they were quite the regulars at Azul Tequila, whether that was because of their hangovers that they wanted to soothe after a big night out or that they wanted an affordable but right place to hang out during the day as their first or second round before a night out. So, in short – this place is a super chill place to hang out with your friends and family!
During my handful of visits since 2017, I can proudly recommend that this place is legit and is on my official recommendation list to friends who are visiting town or even new folks who are getting their feet wet in Austin who is looking for some new experiences, because of a new job. Well, whatever the situation is, a question I’ll usually ask my friends are, have you ever had an avocado margarita? The answer is often “no, but what in the world is that???”
As I am from Michigan, I’ve always been told that whatever Mexican food I’ve eaten during my time up north or even in other cities will never compare to Mexican food down in the south. And, they were totally right about that. Let me tell you more about what my tastebuds have experienced with Mexican food, specifically in Azul Tequila.
When you first hear the words “avocado margarita”, it’s a unicorn of a drink because you get your healthy fats from avocado and the tequila for your entertainment or hangover cure. The drink is like a smooth frozen smoothie. The margarita glass’ rim has been dipped into a salt mixture that will help enhance the margarita as salt supposedly stimulates your gustatory receptor cells, which makes up your taste buds. The balance of the flavors of the avocado margarita plus the nice hit of tequila, leaves you wanting more. It also nicely complements your meals too, though if getting an avocado margarita, I would recommend not to get guacamole too. The reason why is that you should really only be having ¼ avocado a day for avocado healthy fats, to be taking the recommended nutritional amount of healthy fats for you. Anything more for the day, your avocado intake won’t be considered healthy fats. Fun fact I learned from an avocado client when I was doing advertising in Australia!
Oh my gosh – where do I even begin? Azul Tequila is truly one of the few restaurants that can really knock their salsa out of the park. Their salsa should be award-winning at this point – it’s that good. Not only is their salsa made homemade, it slightly changes (in spice) throughout the year ever so slightly because they grind up the peppers themselves. Depending on the state of the peppers, it might be even hotter or just hot. If you aren’t into heat, you probably don’t eat salsa often. If you are a salsa lover like me, you will be so impressed on the level of spice and heat that hits the tongue, and then lingers in your mouth and glorifies your tastebuds. It’s not HOT spice, it’s the heat of the spice that delicately takes over your mouth. The harmony of Azul Tequila’s salsa includes ingredients such as onion, diced tomatoes, cilantro, slices of pepper remnants, and a heaping of black pepper. The salsa comes with warm tortilla chips, every time! The best part of this place is that the chips and salsa have bottomless refills!
You really have to try it for yourself to believe it! It’s far from your typical salsa, even when compared to other Mexican restaurants!
Chicken Enchilada Alamo with Green Sauce
Azul Tequila has a ton more other entree options that are truly authentic Mexican dishes, besides chicken enchilada. I’m pretty basic, and not saying that I don’t explore other food and taste them if I am looking for a full main dish, I’m like you – I get the chicken enchilada with the green sauce.
To me, the best part of this meal isn’t just the chicken enchilada themselves, it’s the black refried beans and the side of rice that comes with it that makes the most perfect pairing that gives the ultimate combination of flavors in your mouth. I like to add a drizzle of their complimentary salsa to add more heat to my dish, even though I have just consumed a bucket worth of salsa! They have seven different kinds of enchiladas for you to choose from:
Two chicken, beef or cheese enchiladas topped with green, chipotle, ranchera or chile con carne.
Two chicken enchiladas topped with pipian sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds.
Two cheese enchiladas topped with chile con carne and chile con queso.
Two chicken enchiladas topped with mole sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds.
Two spinach or mushroom enchiladas, topped with poblano cream sauce.
ENCHILADAS CHILE ANCHO
Two chicken fajita enchiladas topped with chile ancho sauce and cheese.
Two cheese enchiladas topped with chile con carne and chicken or beef fajita meat.
Azul Tequila Pricing
Currently, as of February 2020, they have an amazing lunch special from Monday to Friday from 11 to 3pm. All main entrees are $8.99. Their margaritas are $1.99 during this time too!
But overall even during dinner time and on the weekends, their prices are on average when going out to eat at a restaurant. It’s not overpriced and you get a lot of food too, to the point that you can save it for tomorrow’s leftovers if you really wanted to!
